Blood-Flow-Restriction Cuffs

Occlusion training cuffs, covered by a published position stand on methodology, application and safety.

Blood-flow-restriction (BFR) cuffs are inflatable bands worn at the top of a limb during exercise, restricting venous return so that very light loads produce unusually deep muscle fatigue.

What published research reports

The international position stand published in Frontiers in Physiology (2019) reports that low-load training with BFR — typically 20–40% of one-rep max — produces muscle growth comparable to conventional heavy training in many studies, with smaller strength gains than heavy loading itself. The document reports the method has been studied in athletes, older adults and rehabilitation patients who cannot tolerate heavy loads, describes appropriate cuff pressures relative to limb occlusion pressure, and lists screening considerations — including clotting risk factors — that belong with a qualified professional. It emphasises using purpose-made cuffs at measured pressures rather than improvised wraps at unknown ones.
