Physical Activity Guidelines

The WHO's published weekly movement targets for adults, from its 2020 guidelines.

The World Health Organization publishes global physical-activity guidelines — the reference numbers behind most national recommendations.

What published research reports

The WHO 2020 guidelines, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, recommend that adults accumulate 150–300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week (or 75–150 minutes of vigorous activity, or an equivalent mix), plus muscle-strengthening activity involving all major muscle groups on two or more days per week. The guidelines report that any activity is better than none, that benefits rise with amounts above the minimum, and that sedentary time should be limited and broken up with movement. Separate targets are published for children, older adults, pregnancy and people with chronic conditions.
