Pneumatic compression boots are inflatable leg sleeves that squeeze and release in waves from the feet upward, mimicking the muscle pump that moves fluid out of the limbs.
A systematic review and meta-analysis in Biology of Sport (2024) pooled the available trials of lower-limb intermittent pneumatic compression for sports recovery and reported small reductions in muscle soreness and perceived fatigue after use, with no consistent effect on objective performance recovery or blood markers of muscle damage compared with control conditions. The authors describe the evidence base as limited by small samples and varied protocols. Clinical contraindications documented for pneumatic compression — such as suspected deep-vein thrombosis — appear in device labelling.
