Weightlifting Belt

The rigid lifting belt, studied in biomechanics research on intra-abdominal pressure during heavy squats and deadlifts.

A weightlifting belt is a rigid band worn around the trunk during heavy barbell lifts. It works by giving the abdominal wall something to brace against, not by holding the spine directly.

What published research reports

Biomechanics studies published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise report that wearing a belt during heavy squats increases intra-abdominal pressure — the internal brace that stiffens the trunk — compared with beltless lifting, with some studies also reporting slightly faster bar speed at the same load. The published research examines belts on near-maximal barbell lifts; it does not report benefits for light exercises, and studies of long-term belt reliance are lacking. Research on belts as protection against injury in healthy lifters is reported as inconclusive in the occupational literature.
