What "Certified" Actually Means

The accreditation system behind legitimate personal-training credentials, as documented by the US Registry of Exercise Professionals.

"Certified personal trainer" is not a protected title — anyone can print it on a website. What separates recognised credentials from certificates of attendance is third-party accreditation of the certifying exam.

What the public record shows

The United States Registry of Exercise Professionals (USREPS) documents that the credentials it registers come from certifying bodies whose exams are accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA) — the same accreditation model used for credentials in nursing and other licensed fields. Accredited certifications require passing a proctored exam, typically require a current CPR/AED qualification, and require continuing education to stay valid. The organisations listed on this page — NSCA, ACSM, NASM, ACE and others — all hold NCCA accreditation for the certifications described, per the USREPS credential list.
