Overview

Purpose. Overload the push-off leg during lateral movement so unresisted shuffles feel faster and stay lower.

How it fits the system. An intermediate-level resisted footwork entry in the Agility & Footwork section, programmed to develop lateral speed and hip strength. Related work in the library: Lateral Shuffle and Banded Lateral Walk.

How to Perform

  1. Loop a band around the waist, anchored behind or held by a partner to the side.
  2. Set an athletic stance: hips back, chest up, feet outside the shoulders.
  3. Shuffle hard against the band for the set distance without clicking the heels together.
  4. Walk back and repeat; face the same way so both directions get worked.

Coaching Cues

  • Push the ground away — the trail leg does the work.
  • Stay level: no bouncing, no rising out of the stance.
  • Feet never cross, heels never touch.

Common Mistakes

  • Standing taller as fatigue sets in.
  • Pulling with the lead leg instead of pushing with the trail leg.
  • Letting the band rotate the trunk toward the anchor.

Progressions & Regressions

No items found.
Progressions
Heavier band, longer shuffles, or finish each rep with a band-release burst shuffle.
Regressions
Lighter band or shorter distances with full recovery.

When to Use It

When to use
Early in a speed or agility session after warm-up, before unresisted change-of-direction work.
When not to use
With acute groin or hip flexor strains, or as a conditioning finisher where form decays.
Programming
4 to 6 shuffles of 5 to 10 metres per side with 45 to 60 seconds of rest.
