How to Perform

  1. Lie back with a foam roller across the mid-back and the hands supporting the head.
  2. Keep the ribs down and the glutes on the floor.
  3. Extend gently over the roller for two to three seconds, exhaling.
  4. Return, then move the roller one segment higher and repeat.

Coaching Cues

  • "Extend from the mid-back, not the lower back."
  • "Exhale into the range."
  • "Keep the hips down."

Common Mistakes

  • Hinging at the lumbar spine instead of the thorax.
  • Rolling continuously rather than extending at segments.

Use a rolled towel, or perform over a chair back.
