How to Perform

  1. Cross the blocking arm up near the opposite shoulder with the fist closed.
  2. Rotate the hips and sweep the forearm down and across the front of the body.
  3. Finish with the fist roughly a fist-width above the thigh and the arm slightly bent.
  4. Withdraw the other hand sharply to the hip at the same time.

Coaching Cues

  • “Sweep it away, do not hammer down.”
  • “Hips turn as the arm travels.”
  • “Finish above the thigh, not against it.”

Common Mistakes

  • Using the arm only, with no hip rotation, which makes the block weak.
  • Over-extending so the arm locks out and the elbow is exposed.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add it stepping forward, then against a partner’s low kick, then block and counter.
Regressions
Practise the arm path slowly with the hips fixed, then add rotation.

When to Use It

When to use
Kihon practice, line drills and kumite preparation.
When not to use
Wrist, elbow or shoulder injury.
Programming
3–5 sets of 10–20 repetitions per side with full extension and full retraction.
