Overview

Purpose. Remove the immediate threat to the airway and counter-attack in a single continuous response.

How to Perform

  1. Tuck the chin and immediately bring both hands up to the attacker’s thumbs or wrists.
  2. Pluck sharply downwards and outwards in the direction the thumbs point, using bodyweight.
  3. Simultaneously or immediately after, deliver a knee to the groin or a strike to the head.
  4. Continue striking, create space and disengage.

Coaching Cues

  • “Chin down first, hands second.”
  • “Pluck the thumbs, not the forearms.”
  • “Never pluck without a counter.”

Common Mistakes

  • Grabbing the forearms rather than the thumbs, which is far harder to break.
  • Removing the hands and then stopping, allowing the attacker to reapply.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add a push variation, then a choke against a wall, then partner pressure with controlled force.
Regressions
Practise the pluck mechanics with a partner applying light, static pressure only.

When to Use It

When to use
Self-defence technique blocks and stress-inoculation drills.
When not to use
Never practise choke defences with real pressure on the airway. Use light static contact only.
Programming
3–5 sets of 5–8 repetitions per side with a partner, then 2–3 short pressure rounds.
