Overview

Purpose. Build single-leg strength in the frontal plane, where most squats and lunges never load you.

How it fits the system. An intermediate-level lateral strength entry in the Agility & Footwork section, programmed to develop change-of-direction strength and knee control. Related work in the library: Lateral Step-Down and Lateral Lunge.

How to Perform

  1. Stand side-on to a knee-height box with the near foot on top.
  2. Keep the trunk tall and drive through the whole top foot to stand up on the box.
  3. Control the descent for two to three seconds until the floor foot touches lightly.
  4. Finish all reps on one side, then face the other way and switch.

Coaching Cues

  • Push the floor away sideways — do not bounce off the bottom leg.
  • Keep the pelvis level throughout; no hip drop.
  • Knee tracks over the middle of the foot, not inside it.

Common Mistakes

  • Kicking off the floor leg instead of driving with the top leg.
  • Letting the knee cave inward at the top.
  • Using a box so high the pelvis has to hike to reach it.

Progressions & Regressions

No items found.
Progressions
Raise the box height, then hold a dumbbell in the goblet position, then slow the eccentric to five seconds.
Regressions
Lower the box or use a light hand support for balance.

When to Use It

When to use
As frontal-plane strength work after the main lower-body lift, or in return-to-play knee programs.
When not to use
With acute knee pain on lateral loading, or before a controlled step-down is possible.
Programming
3 sets of 6 to 10 repetitions per side with 60 to 90 seconds of rest.
