Overview

Purpose. Squat heavy with a consistent depth and no shoulder or wrist demand.

How to Perform

  1. Set a box that puts the hip crease level with the knee.
  2. Take the safety bar high on the traps and hold the handles.
  3. Sit back to the box, keeping the shins near vertical.
  4. Pause without relaxing, then drive up and stand tall.

Coaching Cues

  • "Fight the forward pull of the bar."
  • "Sit back to the box."
  • "Elbows down, chest up."

Common Mistakes

  • Rocking on the box.
  • Letting the bar pull the chest down.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add load, or reduce box height.
Regressions
Barbell box squat, or a goblet squat.

When to Use It

When to use
Strength blocks, and for lifters with shoulder or elbow restrictions.
When not to use
Neck or upper-back pain from the bar position.
Programming
3–6 reps, 3–5 sets, 70–85% of one-repetition maximum, 2–3 minutes rest.
