Overview

Purpose. Build squat strength with a load that constantly demands trunk correction, as real objects do.

How to Perform

  1. Clean or lift a sandbag to the chest and hug it high, close to the throat.
  2. Set the feet shoulder-width and brace hard.
  3. Squat to depth while keeping the chest tall and the bag from sliding.
  4. Drive up through the whole foot.

Coaching Cues

  • "Hug the bag into the chest."
  • "Elbows high to stop the slide."
  • "Brace before every rep."

Common Mistakes

  • Letting the bag slide down and pulling the chest forward.
  • Losing the brace under the shifting load.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase bag weight, add reps, or move to a shouldered position.
Regressions
Goblet squat, or a lighter bag.

When to Use It

When to use
Tactical strength, general squat variation and grip-free loading.
When not to use
Acute low-back pain, or when the bag cannot be held securely.
Programming
6–10 reps, 3–4 sets, 90 seconds rest.
