Overview

Purpose. Build frontal-plane control of the foot, ankle and hip in a very low-risk task.

How to Perform

  1. Find a line on the floor.
  2. Place the heel of one foot directly in front of the toes of the other.
  3. Walk forward slowly, keeping the arms relaxed at the sides.
  4. Cover 10–15 steps, then turn and return.

Coaching Cues

  • "Eyes forward, not down."
  • "Grip the floor with the toes."
  • "Slow is harder than fast."

Common Mistakes

  • Rushing and using momentum.
  • Using the arms to catch balance rather than the foot.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Close the eyes, add head turns, or walk backwards.
Regressions
Widen the base slightly, or use a wall for fingertip support.

When to Use It

When to use
Warm-ups, rehabilitation and older or novice athletes.
When not to use
Acute vertigo or severe balance impairment without supervision.
Programming
3–4 passes of 10–15 steps, minimal rest.
