Overview

Purpose. Attack high then low so that the opponent’s guard is drawn upwards before the body is exposed.

How to Perform

  1. Throw the jab and cross to the head, drawing the guard up.
  2. Bend both knees to change level while keeping the spine upright and the free hand high.
  3. Throw the lead hook into the ribs from the lowered position.
  4. Return to full height, reset the guard, and pivot or move out.

Coaching Cues

  • “High, high, low.”
  • “Change level with the legs.”
  • “Come back up before you do anything else.”

Common Mistakes

  • Bending at the waist for the body hook, which drops the head into an uppercut.
  • Staying low after the punch.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add a return to the head after the body shot, then add a slip before the sequence.
Regressions
Practise the level change and body hook alone on the bag.

When to Use It

When to use
Pad rounds, bag rounds and shadow rounds once the individual strikes are competent.
When not to use
Before the component strikes can be thrown correctly in isolation.
Programming
3–6 rounds of 2–3 minutes, 8–15 repetitions of the combination per round.
