Overview

Purpose. Attack on two different planes in one sequence so that a guard adjusted to straight punches is beaten by the hook.

How to Perform

  1. Throw the jab and retract it.
  2. Throw the cross with full hip rotation and begin retracting.
  3. As the cross returns, pivot the lead foot and throw the lead hook without pausing.
  4. Recover the guard, reset the feet, and pivot out or move.

Coaching Cues

  • “Straight, straight, around.”
  • “The hook starts as the cross returns.”
  • “Reset the feet before you throw again.”

Common Mistakes

  • Ending square and off balance after the hook.
  • Throwing the hook wide from long range where it cannot land.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add a fourth punch, then attack the body with the hook, then finish with a pivot.
Regressions
Practise the cross-to-hook transition on its own until it flows.

When to Use It

When to use
Pad rounds, bag rounds and shadow rounds once the individual strikes are competent.
When not to use
Before the component strikes can be thrown correctly in isolation.
Programming
3–6 rounds of 2–3 minutes, 8–15 repetitions of the combination per round.
