Overview

Purpose. Deliver a powerful close-range upward punch through the centre using rear-leg drive and rotation.

How to Perform

  1. From the stance, bend the rear knee slightly and load the rear side.
  2. Rotate the rear hip forward and drive up, sending the fist up the centre line, palm towards you.
  3. Keep the elbow tucked and the punch short, finishing at chin height.
  4. Return the hand to the guard and reset the stance.

Coaching Cues

  • “Screw the back foot into the floor and stand up into it.”
  • “Short punch, tight elbow.”
  • “Keep the lead hand up.”

Common Mistakes

  • Swinging the arm from a wide position, which becomes a looping shot.
  • Standing fully upright at the finish and losing balance.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add it as the finish of a hook combination, then as a counter on the inside.
Regressions
Practise the loading and rotation on a heavy bag at low power.

When to Use It

When to use
Technical rounds, pad work and bag work in a striking session.
When not to use
Hand, wrist or shoulder injury, or any suspected concussion.
Programming
3–5 rounds of 2–3 minutes, 60 seconds rest between rounds.
