How to Perform

  1. At close range, throw the lead uppercut up the centre with a small dip of the lead knee.
  2. Follow immediately with the rear hook around the guard.
  3. Finish with the cross straight down the middle as the opponent resets.
  4. Recover the guard and either clinch, pivot or step out.

Coaching Cues

  • “Up, around, straight.”
  • “Stay tall between punches; only the knees dip.”
  • “Do not stand in front of them at the end.”

Common Mistakes

  • Throwing all three from a stationary square position, which is easy to counter.
  • Losing the guard entirely during the hook.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add a level change into the sequence, then throw it off a catch, then add a pivot exit.
Regressions
Practise each pair of punches separately before combining all three.

Pad rounds, bag rounds and shadow rounds once the individual strikes are competent.
When not to use
Before the component strikes can be thrown correctly in isolation.
