How to Perform

  1. From the stance, keep the hands up and the feet planted.
  2. Rotate the trunk slightly and shift the head a few centimetres off the centre line, inside or outside the incoming punch.
  3. Bend the knees a little rather than bending at the waist.
  4. Return the head to the centre line immediately and be ready to counter.

Coaching Cues

  • “Move the head the width of a fist, not a metre.”
  • “Slip with the legs and the hips, not the neck.”
  • “Come back to centre straight away.”

Common Mistakes

  • Over-slipping, which puts the athlete off balance and out of counter range.
  • Slipping without keeping the hands up, relying on the movement alone.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add a counter punch after the slip, then slip on a partner’s jab, then slip and pivot.
Regressions
Practise slips against a slowly extended partner hand or on a slip rope.

When to use
Technical rounds, pad work and bag work in a striking session.
When not to use
Hand, wrist or shoulder injury, or any suspected concussion.
