How to Perform

  1. Stand at a distance where the punch reaches the pad with the arm almost fully extended.
  2. Strike with the first two knuckles, keeping the wrist straight and the forearm aligned behind them.
  3. Begin with light contact and low volume, allowing the post to flex and return.
  4. Increase force gradually over weeks rather than within a session.

Coaching Cues

  • “First two knuckles, straight wrist.”
  • “Push through the post rather than slapping it.”
  • “Add force over months, not minutes.”

Common Mistakes

  • Progressing force too quickly, which risks knuckle, wrist and hand injury.
  • Striking with a bent wrist, which is the primary mechanism of injury here.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase contact force and volume very gradually, then add other hand techniques.
Regressions
Use a heavy bag or focus mitts instead, which are far more forgiving.

When to Use It

When to use
Kihon practice, line drills and kumite preparation.
When not to use
Any wrist, hand or knuckle pain, and never as a beginner without direct supervision.
Programming
20–50 strikes per hand, 2–3 sessions per week, force increased only across months.
