How to Perform

  1. Open the hand and pull the fingers back so the heel of the palm leads.
  2. Drive the strike forward with hip rotation, keeping the wrist firmly extended.
  3. Aim for the jaw, nose or chin, following through rather than tapping.
  4. Recover the hand to guard and continue with the next strike.

Coaching Cues

  • “Wrist locked back, heel of the hand leads.”
  • “Fingers out of the way.”
  • “Follow through, then keep going.”

Common Mistakes

  • Striking with a floppy wrist, which transfers little force and risks injury.
  • Striking with the fingers extended forward where they can be broken.
