How to Perform

  1. Close the fist and identify the bottom edge, below the little finger, as the striking surface.
  2. Drive the strike along the required line, downward onto a bent-over target or laterally into the temple or jaw.
  3. Use trunk rotation or bodyweight to add force rather than the arm alone.
  4. Recover the hand and continue striking or disengage.

Coaching Cues

  • “Strike with the meat of the hand, not the knuckles.”
  • “Bodyweight goes with it.”
  • “Any angle is available, so choose the shortest one.”

Common Mistakes

  • Striking with the knuckles, which reintroduces the hand injury risk it is designed to avoid.
  • Winding up widely, which telegraphs the strike.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add it in combinations, then from the ground, then under partner pressure.
Regressions
Practise on a heavy bag or focus mitt slowly, checking the contact surface.

When to Use It

When to use
Self-defence technique blocks and stress-inoculation drills.
When not to use
Any joint injury that prevents controlled striking, and always with a competent partner and protective equipment.
Programming
3–5 sets of 10–20 repetitions per side, then 2–3 rounds under pressure with a partner.
