Overview

Purpose. Develop hip rotation speed and crossover coordination, which underpins the crossover step used to accelerate laterally.

How it fits the system. The rotational pattern in the Agility & Footwork section and the ladder version of the classic carioca warm-up. Related work in the library: Carioca and Ladder Lateral In-Out.

How to Perform

  1. Stand beside the ladder with the shoulders square along its length.
  2. Step the trail foot across in front of the lead leg into the square.
  3. Step the lead foot along, then step the trail foot behind the lead leg into the next square.
  4. Continue the front-behind alternation along the ladder, then repeat facing the other way.

Coaching Cues

  • “Shoulders stay square, hips rotate.”
  • “Cross tight, not wide.”
  • “Keep the tempo even both ways.”

Common Mistakes

  • Rotating the shoulders with the hips, which removes the separation being trained.
  • Crossing so wide that the rhythm breaks down.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase tempo, then add a sprint exit, then perform it as a reactive drill on a coach call.
Regressions
Walk the crossover pattern beside the ladder without using the squares.

When to Use It

When to use
Warm-ups, foot-speed and coordination blocks, and low-load days between heavy sessions.
When not to use
Acute lower-limb injury, or when the pattern cannot be completed without stumbling.
Programming
4–6 passes per pattern, 2–4 patterns per session, full recovery between passes.
