Overview

How to Perform

  1. Stand beside the ladder facing along its length.
  2. Cross the trail foot in front into the square, then step the lead foot out beyond the far rail.
  3. Bring the trail foot behind into the next square, then step the lead foot out again.
  4. Continue the repeating pattern, then reverse direction.

Coaching Cues

  • “Front, out, behind, out.”
  • “Keep the shoulders quiet.”
  • “Trust the rhythm rather than watching the feet.”

Common Mistakes

  • Losing the sequence and improvising, which trains nothing specific.
  • Slowing to check foot placement rather than committing to the tempo.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase tempo, then perform it in both directions consecutively, then add an exit sprint.
Regressions
Walk the four-count sequence until it is memorised.

When to Use It

When to use
Warm-ups, foot-speed and coordination blocks, and low-load days between heavy sessions.
When not to use
Acute lower-limb injury, or when the pattern cannot be completed without stumbling.
Programming
4–6 passes per pattern, 2–4 patterns per session, full recovery between passes.
