Overview

Purpose. Push contact frequency to the upper limit of what the athlete can control, developing foot speed and coordination under time pressure.

How it fits the system. A high-tempo coordination challenge in the Agility & Footwork section for athletes who already own the basic patterns. Related work in the library: Ladder Icky Shuffle and Ladder In-In-Out-Out.

How to Perform

  1. Begin at the base of the ladder in an athletic stance.
  2. Perform rapid alternating in-and-out foot placements, advancing one square at a time.
  3. Keep the contacts as light and as frequent as you can control.
  4. Complete the ladder and walk back before repeating.

Coaching Cues

  • “Fast feet, quiet feet.”
  • “Stay tall and let the ankles do the work.”
  • “If you lose the rhythm, slow down rather than pushing through.”

Common Mistakes

  • Sacrificing the pattern for speed, which trains disorganised footwork.
  • Heavy heel contacts.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase tempo with a metronome, then add a sprint exit.
Regressions
Return to the Ladder Icky Shuffle at a moderate tempo.

When to Use It

When to use
Warm-ups, foot-speed and coordination blocks, and low-load days between heavy sessions.
When not to use
Acute lower-limb injury, or when the pattern cannot be completed without stumbling.
Programming
4–6 passes per pattern, 2–4 patterns per session, full recovery between passes.
