Overview

Purpose. Train a repeating three-count in-in-out rhythm that combines forward travel with lateral foot placement.

How it fits the system. The best-known ladder pattern and a benchmark of coordination in the Agility & Footwork section. Related work in the library: Ladder In-In-Out-Out and Ladder Ali Shuffle.

How to Perform

  1. Start with both feet outside the ladder to the left of the first square.
  2. Step the right foot into the first square, then the left foot into the same square.
  3. Step the right foot out to the right of the second square, then repeat the pattern travelling forward.
  4. Keep a continuous in-in-out rhythm without pausing between squares.

Coaching Cues

  • “In, in, out. Say it while you do it.”
  • “Feet under the hips, not out wide.”
  • “Arms drive across the body slightly.”

Common Mistakes

  • Losing the three-count rhythm and reverting to a random step pattern.
  • Reaching too far out to the side, which slows the next contact.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase tempo, then perform it backwards, then add a partner-called direction change at the exit.
Regressions
Break it into three separate steps and walk through them until the sequence is automatic.

When to Use It

When to use
Warm-ups, foot-speed and coordination blocks, and low-load days between heavy sessions.
When not to use
Acute lower-limb injury, or when the pattern cannot be completed without stumbling.
Programming
4–6 passes per pattern, 2–4 patterns per session, full recovery between passes.
