How to Perform

  1. Stand beside the ladder with the shoulders square to your direction of travel.
  2. Step the lead foot into the first square, then bring the trail foot in beside it.
  3. Move the lead foot into the next square and repeat along the ladder.
  4. Return along the ladder facing the same way so both sides are trained.

Coaching Cues

  • “Do not cross the feet.”
  • “Stay low through the hips.”
  • “Push from the outside foot.”

Common Mistakes

  • Turning the hips towards the direction of travel, which converts it into a forward run.
  • Standing tall, which removes the ability to push laterally.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase cadence, then add a resistance band around the waist, then exit into a lateral sprint.
Regressions
Step through slowly with a pause in each square.

When to Use It

When to use
Warm-ups, foot-speed and coordination blocks, and low-load days between heavy sessions.
When not to use
Acute lower-limb injury, or when the pattern cannot be completed without stumbling.
Programming
4–6 passes per pattern, 2–4 patterns per session, full recovery between passes.
