How to Perform

  1. Step the lead foot out at roughly forty-five degrees to open the hip.
  2. Pivot the support foot so the heel points at the target and rotate the hip fully through.
  3. Swing the kicking leg through as one piece with the shin, arm swinging down on the same side for counter-rotation.
  4. Recover by rotating back to stance or by continuing the rotation if the kick misses.

Coaching Cues

  • “Kick with the whole body; the leg is the last part to move.”
  • “Turn the support heel all the way over.”
  • “Swing the same-side arm down like a pendulum.”

Common Mistakes

  • Kicking with a bent knee like a karate roundhouse, which loses the whip and the mass behind it.
  • Failing to pivot the support foot, which caps the rotation and stresses the knee.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add power on the bag, then a switch-step version, then a kick off the back foot from a broken rhythm.
Regressions
Practise the step-out and pivot without the kick until the rotation is complete.

When to Use It

When to use
Technical rounds, pad rounds and bag rounds in a Muay Thai session.
When not to use
Shin, hip or groin injury, or unresolved lower-limb pain.
Programming
3–5 rounds of 3 minutes, 10–20 repetitions per side per round.
