Overview

Purpose. Develop lower-leg elasticity, rhythm and conditioning at the same time.

How to Perform

  1. Set the rope length so the handles reach the armpits when you stand on the middle.
  2. Stand tall with the elbows close to the ribs.
  3. Turn the rope with the wrists rather than the shoulders.
  4. Hop just high enough to clear the rope, staying on the balls of the feet.
  5. Keep the contacts light and quick.
  6. Continue for the prescribed time or repetitions.

Coaching Cues

  • Turn the rope with the wrists.
  • Stay tall and keep the jumps small.
  • Land quietly on the balls of the feet.

Common Mistakes

  • Jumping far higher than needed.
  • Turning the rope with the whole arm.
  • Landing heavily on the heels.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add double unders, single-leg skipping or longer rounds.
Regressions
Shadow skip without a rope, or use shorter rounds.

When to Use It

When to use
In warm-ups, boxing conditioning and calf preparation.
When not to use
With acute Achilles or shin pain.
Programming
5 to 10 rounds of 1 to 3 minutes.
