How to Perform

  1. Set up at the end of the ladder in a boxing stance with the hands up.
  2. Step through the squares maintaining the stance, lead foot then rear foot, without squaring up.
  3. Keep the hands in guard position throughout rather than using the arms for balance.
  4. Work forwards, then backwards, then laterally along the ladder.

Coaching Cues

  • “Hands stay up the entire time.”
  • “Never let the feet come level.”
  • “Short steps; the ladder tells you if they are too long.”

Common Mistakes

  • Dropping the hands to help with balance, which trains a habit that gets you hit.
  • Squaring the feet up, which loses the stance.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add punches on each step, then add a partner-called direction change, then add a resistance band.
Regressions
Step through slowly without punches while a coach checks the stance.

When to Use It

When to use
Warm-ups, foot-speed and coordination blocks, and low-load days between heavy sessions.
When not to use
Acute lower-limb injury, or when the pattern cannot be completed without stumbling.
Programming
4–6 passes per pattern, 2–4 patterns per session, full recovery between passes.
