How to Perform

  1. Begin beside the ladder in an athletic stance.
  2. Shuffle laterally into the first square with both feet.
  3. Immediately step both feet forward into the next square, changing the direction of travel.
  4. Repeat the alternation along the ladder, then work the other side.

Coaching Cues

  • “Plant the outside foot before you change plane.”
  • “Chest stays over the hips through the transition.”
  • “No pause at the change of direction.”

Common Mistakes

  • Standing up during the transition, which loses the ability to push.
  • Rounding the change of direction rather than planting and redirecting.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase tempo, then add a reactive call for the direction of the forward step.
Regressions
Perform the two halves separately before combining them.

When to Use It

When to use
Warm-ups, foot-speed and coordination blocks, and low-load days between heavy sessions.
When not to use
Acute lower-limb injury, or when the pattern cannot be completed without stumbling.
Programming
4–6 passes per pattern, 2–4 patterns per session, full recovery between passes.
