How to Perform

  1. Extend the lead arm towards the opponent’s face with the palm angled outward and the elbow slightly bent.
  2. Keep the rear hand at the chin and the chin tucked behind the lead shoulder.
  3. Use the frame to measure distance and to obstruct their vision, not to push.
  4. Retract into the guard, into a clinch or into a strike as the situation dictates.

Coaching Cues

  • “Frame, do not push.”
  • “Rear hand never leaves the chin.”
  • “Use it to buy a second, then act.”

Common Mistakes

  • Locking the elbow straight, which allows the arm to be pushed aside or hyperextended.
  • Holding it too long, which becomes a target for kicks and elbows.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add a teep or a knee out of the frame, then use it under pressure from a partner, then in sparring.
Regressions
Hold the frame against a compliant partner walking forward slowly.

When not to use
Shin, hip or groin injury, or unresolved lower-limb pain.
