How to Perform

  1. Stay in a light bouncing fighting stance with the weight ready to shift back.
  2. As the opponent commits forward, lift the lead knee and drive a fast kick into their advancing hip or body.
  3. Prioritise arrival time over rotation; the kick may be only partially turned over.
  4. Recover the leg and reset distance immediately.

Coaching Cues

  • “Beat them to the space, do not try to hurt them.”
  • “Lead leg only. It is the closest one.”
  • “Reset your distance immediately after.”

Common Mistakes

  • Winding up for power, which means the kick arrives after the opponent does.
  • Standing flat so the lead leg cannot be lifted quickly.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add reactive partner advances, then combine with a follow-up kick, then use it in sparring.
Regressions
Drill the lead-leg lift and extension from a bouncing stance with no partner.

When to Use It

When to use
Technical kicking blocks, paddle work and sparring preparation.
When not to use
Hip, groin or knee injury, or when hip mobility does not yet allow the height required.
Programming
3–5 sets of 8–12 kicks per leg, quality first, full recovery between sets.
