How to Perform

  1. Set the bag at head height and stand at a range where a full jab just reaches it.
  2. Begin with single jabs, letting the bag return and moving the head off its line.
  3. Add straight combinations, timing each punch to the bag rather than swinging freely.
  4. Keep the feet moving and the hands returning to the guard.

Coaching Cues

  • “Punch the bag, then move your head.”
  • “Straight punches only until the timing is reliable.”
  • “Return to guard between every punch.”

Common Mistakes

  • Standing still and letting the bag hit the face, which teaches nothing except flinching.
  • Throwing wide punches, which the bag will not reward.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Increase tempo, then add hooks and uppercuts, then add lateral movement around the bag.
Regressions
Loosen the cords so the bag returns more slowly, and work single jabs only.

When to Use It

When to use
Technical rounds, pad work and bag work in a striking session.
When not to use
Hand, wrist or shoulder injury, or any suspected concussion.
Programming
3–5 rounds of 2–3 minutes with 60 seconds rest.
