How to Perform

  1. Hold the guard with the hands high and the elbows in.
  2. As the punch arrives, make a short tap or deflection with the near hand to redirect it off line.
  3. Keep the movement small; the hand travels only a few centimetres.
  4. Return the hand immediately and counter into the gap created.

Coaching Cues

  • “Tap it off line; do not push it away.”
  • “Small hands, small movement.”
  • “The parry and the counter happen together.”

Common Mistakes

  • Reaching out to meet the punch, which opens the guard.
  • Parrying across the body so far that the guard is dragged open.
