How to Perform

  1. From a neutral or fighting position with the hands at chin height, watch the attacker’s centre.
  2. Deflect the incoming punch with the palm of the near hand, moving it just off the centre line.
  3. Shift the head slightly off line at the same moment rather than relying on the hand alone.
  4. Counter down the centre with the other hand simultaneously and continue.

Coaching Cues

  • “Small hand movement, small head movement, big counter.”
  • “Deflect, do not push.”
  • “Both things happen at once.”

Common Mistakes

  • Reaching out to meet the punch, which opens the guard and slows the counter.
  • Relying only on the hand and leaving the head on the centre line.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Defend a jab, then a jab and cross, then under partner pressure with protective gear.
Regressions
Partner extends a single slow punch while the athlete deflects only.

When to Use It

When to use
Self-defence technique blocks and stress-inoculation drills.
When not to use
Any joint injury that prevents controlled striking, and always with a competent partner and protective equipment.
Programming
3–5 sets of 10–20 repetitions per side, then 2–3 rounds under pressure with a partner.
