How to Perform

  1. From a neutral position, react to the incoming attack by sending the near forearm out to meet it.
  2. Keep the elbow bent at roughly ninety degrees and the wrist firm, contacting with the outer forearm.
  3. Make the block and the counter-strike happen simultaneously with the other hand.
  4. Continue striking and then disengage.

Coaching Cues

  • “Meet it early, close to their arm and away from your head.”
  • “Elbow bent, wrist firm.”
  • “Block and punch at the same time, never one then the other.”

Common Mistakes

  • Blocking with a straight arm, which allows the attack to collapse the block onto the head.
  • Blocking first and then countering, which surrenders the tempo.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add multiple angles, then react to a partner’s unpredictable attacks, then under pressure with protective gear.
Regressions
Partner delivers slow, telegraphed attacks from one angle at a time.

When to Use It

When to use
Self-defence technique blocks and stress-inoculation drills.
When not to use
Any joint injury that prevents controlled striking, and always with a competent partner and protective equipment.
Programming
3–5 sets of 10–20 repetitions per side, then 2–3 rounds under pressure with a partner.
