How to Perform

  1. Begin standing neutrally as you would in daily life, with the hands down.
  2. On a cue, step into a fighting stance with the hands up, the chin down and the weight balanced.
  3. Move forward, backward and laterally without crossing the feet, keeping the hands up.
  4. Add angular steps that move off the attacker’s line rather than straight backwards.

Coaching Cues

  • “Hands up before feet move.”
  • “Move off the line, not straight back.”
  • “Never cross the feet.”

Common Mistakes

  • Practising only from a fighting stance, which is not how a real confrontation begins.
  • Backing straight up, which keeps the athlete on the attacker’s line and runs out of space.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add strikes out of each movement, then a partner advancing, then movement under verbal and physical pressure.
Regressions
Practise the neutral-to-stance transition slowly in a mirror.

When to Use It

When to use
Self-defence technique blocks and stress-inoculation drills.
When not to use
Any joint injury that prevents controlled striking, and always with a competent partner and protective equipment.
Programming
3–5 rounds of 2 minutes, or 8–10 minutes as part of a warm-up.
