How to Perform

  1. Adopt a slightly bladed stance with the lead shoulder raised and the rear hand at the chin.
  2. As the punch arrives, rotate the torso so the lead shoulder takes the impact and deflects it.
  3. Keep the chin tucked behind the raised shoulder throughout the rotation.
  4. Rotate back into range immediately, countering with the rear hand.

Coaching Cues

  • “Chin hides behind the shoulder.”
  • “Rotate; do not lean away.”
  • “The roll and the counter are the same movement.”

Common Mistakes

  • Leaning backwards instead of rotating, which removes any counter.
  • Using it against hooks, which it does not defend.

Progressions & Regressions

Progressions
Add a rear-hand counter, then roll off a partner’s jab and cross, then combine with a pivot.
Regressions
Rehearse the rotation slowly against a partner touching the shoulder with an open glove.

When to Use It

When to use
Technical rounds, pad work and bag work in a striking session.
When not to use
Hand, wrist or shoulder injury, or any suspected concussion.
Programming
3–5 rounds of 2–3 minutes, 60 seconds rest between rounds.
